Poland's Zbigniew Brodka has won gold in the men's 1500m speed skating final after beating Koen Verweij of the Netherlands by three thousandths of a second.

Brodka has seemingly done enough to win the gold medal, but his triumph came under threat after a flying final lap by Verweij and the two men were tied after the original times were given.

However, after a nervewracking wait, Brodka was given victory by the most slender of margins, as he finished with a time of 1:45.006 compared to Verweij's time of 1:45.009.

Denny Morrison of Canada claimed the bronze medal with a time of 1:45.22.
