Devastating Venus Williams whitewashes Madison Brengle

Venus Williams makes a statement on day one of Wimbledon by thumping fellow American Madison Brengle 6-0 6-0 to reach the next round.

Venus Williams fired a warning to her rivals at Wimbledon by whitewashing fellow American Madison Brengle in the first round this evening.

The five-time champion followed sister Serena into the next round by thumping Brengle 6-0 6-0 in a rout that lasted just 44 minutes.

Earlier in the day, Serena moved level with her sibling on the same number of all-time wins at SW19 by beating Margarita Gasparyan - 73.

Williams barely broke sweat as she cruised into a first-set lead, with Brengle struggling to get to grips with the veteran's sheer power.

The world number 16 - ranked 20 places above Brengle at 36 - continued her dominance well into the second set, leading 3-0 before ultimately closing out the match.
