It was a strong start from the French Open champion as he broke serve instantly in the first set, but Chung was able to handle the Swiss pro's attack and eventually broke back.
Wawrinka was under pressure as Chung created three break-point chances, but the 30-year-old was able to save them and force the set into a tie-break, which he clinched 7-2.
Instead of dominating the court after taking a one-set lead, Wawrinka was broken in his first service game, and while Chung managed to initially stay strong on serve, he was eventually broken.
Once again, a tie-break was needed to decide the set, and it was Wawrinka who broke early to maintain his advantage and double his lead in the Louis Armstrong Stadium.
Wawrinka then completed the straight-sets victory but, yet again, needed a tie-break to win the third set. The games went to serve throughout the set, with Chung winning three love games.
The world number five lost a match point in game 12 and then had to defend a set point during the tie-break, but secured his passage to the third round with an 8-6 victory.
