Janko Tipsarevic is into the fourth round of the US Open after Tomas Berdych retired through injury during the second set of their match.
The Czech lost the first set 6-4 and was 5-0 down in the second before withdrawing.
The ninth seed had experienced a shoulder problem in the Open's warm-up event in Cincinnati last month, where he beat Roger Federer on the way to retiring in his semi-final against Novak Djokovic.
Tipsarevic now faces Juan Carlos Ferrero after the Spaniard's opponent, Marcel Granollers, withdrew from their match through injury.
