Milos Raonic holds nerve to see off Fernando Verdasco

Milos Raonic earns a place in round three of the US Open with a four-set win over Fernando Verdasco.

Milos Raonic has overcome the challenge of Fernando Verdasco to secure his place in the US Open third round.

The 10th seed found himself being pegged back during the middle part of the contest before eventually sealing a 6-2 6-4 6-7 7-6 victory.

It was the perfect start for Raonic as he went a break up at the first time of asking in the opening set, and was able to save three break points in his second service game.

Verdasco failed to recover as he dropped serve again and despite Raonic undergoing some treatment from his trainer between points, the 31-year-old was unable to stop himself from going a set down.

Raonic took the second set with a single break of serve, but he struggled to create a break-point opportunity in the third as it was forced into a tie-break.

The Canadian started strongly by breaking and immediately holding, but Verdasco responded with a break back and eventually snatched the tie-break to pull a set back.

The fourth set was also evenly contested, but on this occasion, Raonic dominated the tie-break, racing into a 6-0 lead before sealing the win with his second match point.
