David Goffin makes light work of Simone Bolelli

David Goffin is safely through to the second round of the US Open after a straight-sets victory over Simone Bolelli.

David Goffin has dropped just seven games on the way to an emphatic victory over Simone Bolelli in the first round of the US Open.

The 14th seed ran out a 6-4 6-1 6-2 winner over the Italian to begin his bid to reach the quarter-final of a Grand Slam in fine style.

The opening set was fiercely contested, but despite creating more break-point opportunities than Goffin, Bolelli couldn't break through and his Belgian opponent struck to edge into the lead.

Goffin found more rhythm at the start of the second, immediately reeling off two breaks of serves to open up a 4-0 lead, and Bolelli had no answer as Goffin cantered into a two-set advantage.

Bolelli needed a response, but he quickly fell down 3-0 down in the third and Goffin was able to comfortably see out the remainder of the match.
