Barty and Williams also make it through.

Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic and Serena Williams were all in action and all made it through to round three.

But those players not lucky enough to be scheduled on a show court with a roof were left frustrated as rain wiped out play for the entire day.

Here, PA looks back at day three and forward to day four at the US Open.

Shot of the day

Ashleigh Barty had no right to even reach this drop shot, let alone crash a winner from it.

Shock of the day

There were not enough matches to provide a genuine shock, but there was certainly mild surprise that Federer, for the second successive match, dropped the opening set, this time against Damir Dzumhur. But the five-time champion still won in four. Serena Williams was also a set down to 17-year-old Caty McAnally but battled through.

Quote of the day

Serve of the day

Venus Williams bowed out, and it seemed the American former champion did not even have time to stay for a coffee.

Brit watch

Johanna Konta made a brief appearance on court for her match against Margarita Gasparyan, but the rain started again and prevented the players from even warming up. Konta and Dan Evans, due to play Lucas Pouille, will have to try again on Thursday.
