Andy Murray set to displace Roger Federer at number three

Andy Murray will officially replace Roger Federer as the world's third-best player if he wins the Shanghai Masters on Sunday.

Britain's Andy Murray is set to send Roger Federer to an eight-year low in the world rankings if he successfully defends his Shanghai Masters title by defeating David Ferrer on Sunday.

If Murray claims his second consecutive title in Shanghai he will leapfrog Federer to third in the ATP's rankings.

The last time Federer was ranked lower than number three was in June 2003, a month before he won his first Grand Slam at Wimbledon before progressing to become the world's number one for a record 237 consecutive weeks.

The 30-year-old Swiss player has had a poor 2011, not winning a Grand Slam for the first time since 2003 and claiming only one title in Doha.
