Simona Halep has reached the quarter-finals of the Rogers Cup following a hard-fought 6-3 5-7 6-4 victory over Angelique Kerber.

The German, who had extended her winning streak to seven matches in Toronto, pushed her opponent hard by claiming the second set and leading in the third.

Halep, however, clawed the set back to 3-3 before racing through the last two games at love to defeat the number 13-seeded Kerber, a big ace closing out the match.

The Romanian is now through to the quarter-finals of the Rogers Cup for the first time.
