Gilles Simon has reached the third round of the Rome Masters courtesy of a tough 7-5 6-3 battle against Mikhail Youzhny.
The Frenchman came out on top in the first set following a difficult contest with Youzhny, who displayed some impressive forehands and return shots across the clay court.
Despite some positive play, it was Simon who snatched a vital break of serve to push on and wrap up the opening set in Italy.
The second set was a tight affair yet again, as both players were able to hold their service games, but eventually Simon took the advantage by grabbing a break point and swaying the momentum his way.
