Tomas Berdych took less than an hour to defeat Gael Monfils 6-1 6-1 in the third round of the Madrid Open.
The sixth seed broke at the earliest opportunity, albeit with the aid of the net as his forehand struck the top and left Monfils stranded at the baseline.
Games were then exchanged as the Frenchman got himself on the scoreboard, but Berdych broke again in the sixth game to take complete control.
The Austrian wrapped up the first set and then took that momentum into the second by breaking Monfils in the opening game.
Berdych continued to dominate as Monfils struggled on the clay court conditions, surrendering his serve again to give his opponent a 4-1 lead.
A fourth break of the Frenchman's serve, courtesy of two powerful forehands, secured the result for the 26-year-old, who will play either Rafael Nadal or Fernando Verdasco in the fourth round.
