Maria Sharapova has moved above Petra Kvitova and into second in the latest WTA rankings, issued on Monday.
The Russian was beaten in the final of this year's Australian Open by Victoria Azarenka, who takes top spot from Caroline Wozniacki.
Sharapova, beaten in the quarter-final of last week's Paris Open by eventual champion Angelique Kerber, has capitalised on Kvitova's absence in France.
Australia's Samantha Stosur remains in fifth, behind Wozniacki, with Agnieszka Radwanska, Marion Bartoli, Vera Zvonareva, Li Na and Andrea Petkovic making up the rest of the top ten.
