Marin Cilic through to round four of French Open

Marin Cilic drops nine games on his way to defeating Leonardo Mayer in the third round of the French Open.

Marin Cilic booked his place in the fourth round of the French Open this afternoon thanks to a 6-3 6-2 6-4 victory over Leonardo Mayer.

The two players met at the same stage at Roland Garros in 2010 in what ended up being an even contest, which US Open champion Cilic won in five sets.

However, this time around, it was much more straightforward for the 28-year-old Croatian.

He found breaks of his Argentine opponent's serve easy to come by, which allowed him to wrap up the win in two hours and seven minutes.

Cilic will now take on either Simone Bolelli or 2013 finalist David Ferrer for a place in round five.

Were he to come through that encounter, it would represent his best ever performance on the clay in Paris.
