James Ward, Kyle Edmund begin Australian Open bid on Tuesday

British duo James Ward and Kyle Edmund will play their Australian Open first-round matches early on Tuesday.

British pair James Ward and Kyle Edmund will look to progress through to the second round of the Australian Open when they play their opening matches on Tuesday.

Ward, competing in his second main draw in Melbourne, is scheduled to face 31st seed Fernando Verdasco on Court 7, with that match expected to start around 1.30am, GMT.

Edmund, the British number three behind Andy Murray and Ward, will get things underway against Steve Johnson on Court 22 at midnight, GMT, as he looks to capitalise on his impressive performances in qualifying.

World number one Novak Djokovic is the main attraction during the day session on the Rod Laver Arena, with his encounter against Aljaz Bedene likely to get started around 4am, GMT.

The night session is headlined by women's number one Serena Williams, who will play Belgium's Alison Van Uytvanck on the Margaret Court Arena just after 8am, GMT.
