Cameron Norrie defeats Juan Pablo Varillas in straight sets to reach his second ATP Tour final of 2023 at the Argentina Open.

Cameron Norrie defeated Peruvian qualifier Juan Pablo Varillas in straight sets to advance to his second ATP Tour final of the year at the Argentina Open.

The British number one, whose quarter-final with Tomas Martin Etcheverry on Friday was twice disrupted by rain, showed few ill-effects of that encounter as he won 7-6[5] 6-4 in one hour and 53 minutes.

Norrie broke first in the sixth game of the match before Pablo Varillas broke back straight away and held to get the contest back on serve, but the former then missed two chances for the break which would have wrapped up the first set.

Pablo Varillas held out to force a tie-breaker, which Norrie survived a brief scare in to clinch the first, and he would give himself a healthy cushion with an immediate break in the second set.

The Wimbledon semi-finalist squandered another two chances for a double break and a 3-0 lead, but he remained untroubled in his service games and brought up a 5-3 lead with a fourth love hold in succession for both men.

Pablo Varillas fired two aces to reduce the deficit to 5-4 and force Norrie to serve out the match, but the Peruvian world number 101 was not throwing in the towel and took a 15-40 lead in the 10th game.

However, Norrie staved off that late fightback from Pablo Varillas to reach the final, impressively winning 71% of points behind his second serve, and he will meet world number two Carlos Alcaraz in Sunday's showpiece event.
