Germany battle to victory over Netherlands to win table tennis gold at Baku 2015

Germany beat the Netherlands 3-2 in the women's team table tennis to win the European Games' first gold medal in the event.

Germany have cemented their place in history by beating the Netherlands to win the first women's team table tennis gold medal at the European Games in Baku.

Li Jiao beat Han Ying in the opening match to give the Netherlands an early lead, but Shan Xiaona hit back to level things up overall in the second singles match.

The pairing of Petrissa Solja and Shan then claimed a vital 3-2 win in the doubles to put Germany ahead for the first time, only for Li Jie to once more tie the contest.

Ying Han was the eventual hero, securing the gold medal for Germany with a 3-0 triumph over Britt Eerland in the crucial final match.

Czech Republic beat the Ukraine earlier today to claim bronze.
