Table tennis star Paul Drinkhall: 'England in great shape'

Table tennis star Paul Drinkhall insists that England are in "great shape" following a combined 9-0 victory for the nation's players today.

Paul Drinkhall has insisted that Team England's table tennis competitors are in "great shape" after coming through their opening matches with ease.

Joanna Drinkhall and Kelly Sibley each won their individual matches on Thursday afternoon, while Liam Pitchford also came through his contest unscathed.

Drinkhall and Andrew Baggaley then completed the clean sweep for England in the men's doubles, with not a single game dropped between them.

"I think we are in great shape," Drinkhall said. "We have all had great seasons, we have prepared well and done everything right – now we have just got to try and put it into place and try and win medals.

"We got through 9-0 overall so it was a good result and it is a good confidence booster to move on."

On his individual match - an 11-7 11-8 11-4 victory over Simon Tomlinson - the 24-year-old added: "It is different conditions, a different hall, quite a big event and quite different to other tournaments so it is good to come through."

Drinkhall is currently ranked as Britain's men's number one player.
