Wales's Rachel Williams 'surprised' to have swam personal best in 200m medley

Team Wales swimmer Rachel Williams admits that she was 'surprised' to have swam a personal best in the 200m individual medley this morning.

Team Wales swimmer Rachel Williams has admitted that she was 'surprised' to swim a personal best time in today's 200m individual medley heat.

The 20-year-old, who is competing in her first Commonwealth Games, finished the race fifth fastest with a time of 2:17.70 at Tollcross this morning.

Prior to that, Williams, who was part of the Wales 4x200m freestyle relay team who were disqualified from the final last night, secured a time of 2:16.53 in her 200m backstroke heat.

"The 200m back was a really good heat swim for me," Williams told reporters. "I haven't done a lot of backstroke training this season, so every time that I get in the pool, it's just been about how much endurance and fitness I've got - going from muscle memory in a way.

"At the end of the day, I've been training a lot more in freestyle this year and with the 200m medley, I haven't actually done one in a few years, so that was a real surprise because I did a PB, so I was really pleased."

Wales were given a six-medal target in the pool, and currently have three to their name with as many days of finals left to swim.
