James Guy has expressed his delight after winning Great Britain's first medal of the World Championships in Kazan on day one.

The 19-year-old set a new British record to finish the final in the silver-medal position with a time of 3:43.75.

China's Sun Yang finished just over a second quicker than his opponent to take gold.

"Everyone wants to win obviously but I can't be happier to win a medal at the World Championships - I'm over the moon with that one," swimming-org quotes Guy as saying.

"I tried to race that from the start and back-end it. Sun Yang is a distance swimmer so he has more endurance than I do so my best chance was to go out hard and try and hold on."

GB's Jazz Carlin narrowly missed out on a spot on the podium on Sunday in the women's 400m freestyle final.
