USA swimmer Ryan Lochte banned from the sport for 10 months

American swimmer Ryan Lochte is banned from the sport for 10 months following his part in a controversial robbery claim while competing at Rio 2016

USA swimmer Ryan Lochte has been banned from the sport for 10 months following his false claims of being robbed at gunpoint while competing at Rio 2016.

The US Olympic Committee and USA Swimming announced the penalty on Thursday, which will see Lochte banned until next June and miss next year's World Championships.

US swimmers Gunnar Bentz, Jack Conger and Jimmy Feigen, who were with Lochte during the controversy in Brazil, have also accepted four-month bans from the sport.

"As we have said previously, the behavior of these athletes was not acceptable. It unfairly maligned our hosts and diverted attention away from the historic achievements of Team USA," said USOC CEO Scott Blackmun. "Each of the athletes has accepted responsibility for his actions and accepted the appropriate sanctions."

Brazilian police charged Lochte with filing a false robbery report last month.
