Commonwealth gold medallist James Magnussen: 'My race plan worked'

Commonwealth gold medallist James Magnussen reveals that he had a race plan heading into the 100m freestyle final.

Australia's James Magnussen has revealed the race plan that clinched him Commonwealth gold in the 100m freestyle final in Glasgow.

The two-time world champion won the race in 48.11 seconds, while his Australian teammates Cameron McEvoy and Tommaso D'Orsogna completed the podium with silver and bronze respectively.

"Obviously it wasn't the quickest [race] I've done, but I wasn't focused whatsoever on time tonight," Magnussen told reporters. "I had a race plan.

"My race plan was to let Cam turn first, let Cam be first off the turn, let Cam be first at 25m and then really save myself for the last 25m and go and get that win. That's what I did and it played out to script."

Magnussen now has two gold medals to his name in Glasgow after helping Australia win the 4x100m freestyle relay.
