Mick Gault: 'Bronze medal is weight off my shoulders'

Mick Gault confesses that winning a record-equalling 18th medal at the Commonwealth Games is a 'weight off his shoulders'.

England's Mick Gault has confessed that winning a record-equalling 18th medal at the Commonwealth Games is a welcome relief.

The 60-year-old took bronze in the men's 10m air pistol event earlier today to match the tally set by Australian shooter Phillip Adams.

"It didn't matter what colour it was, I've got the 18 medals now," he said. "That's exactly what the aim was so it's job done now. It's a weight off my shoulders and I can chillax as they say now. I can focus on my next competition, which is in a couple of days' time.

"I was really feeling the pressure then and all the way through. I don't know where all those tens were coming from as I was shooting all over the place and it was going in the middle. Somebody was on my side."

Gault, who now has the chance to overtake Adams's record when he competes in Monday's 50m air pistol event, added: "We will see what God has got in store. I'm not putting any pressure on myself at all as I've done it now. I can retire, put my feet up and watch everybody else working."

India's Prakash Nanjappa and Daniel Repacholi of Australia took silver and bronze respectively.
