Wales prop Adam Jones has announced his retirement from international rugby after failing to regain his place in Warren Gatland's team.

The 33-year-old Cardiff Blues front rower earned 95 caps with Wales and was part of three Grand Slam-winning sides.

Jones, who toured with the British and Irish Lions in 2009 and 2013, has revealed that his omission from the Six Nations squad helped him make his mind up.

"It's obviously not the way I would want to finish, it's not how I planned it in my head, and I hope no-one thinks I am simply quitting," Jones told The Times.

"It started when I got dropped for the last game of the 2014 Six Nations [against Scotland].

"I was still pretty happy with the way everything was going, and I was thinking that I'd get back in. Then there was the '30-minute match' in South Africa."

Jones's last appearance for his country came when was replaced after half an hour of Wales's 38-16 defeat against the Springbooks in June 2014.
