Alex Dunbar retains Rugby World Cup hopes after injury layoff

Alex Dunbar insists that overcoming a long-term injury in time to feature in the Rugby World Cup for Scotland would be a "dream come true".

Scotland centre Alex Dunbar has revealed that he is still hopeful of regaining full fitness ahead of this autumn's Rugby World Cup.

The 25-year-old was initially expected to miss the remainder of the year after rupturing his anterior cruciate ligament.

Dunbar spent three weeks in the United States undergoing rehab on the injury, but he has yet to be given the green light to resume training with his teammates.

"This is my first chance to play in the World Cup," he told Sky Sports News. "If I can keep pushing and progressing well, it could hopefully be a dream come true.

"That's the hope just now. It's going well, I feel quite positive now and hopefully I can make it. I have still got to see the specialist and still got a lot of fitness work and conditioning to get through before I'm fit to take part in full training.

"I'm happy where I am at the moment but I know there are still a lot of boxes to tick before I can get back out playing."

Dunbar has previously represented Scotland on 14 occasions.
