Gavin Hastings expecting strong sevens event

Former Scotland captain Gavin Hastings says that the Commonwealth Games' rugby sevens event will throw up some "great spectacles" over the weekend.

Former Scotland captain Gavin Hastings has tipped the rugby sevens event to be one of the "great spectacles" of this summer's Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

The host nation kick off the weekend-long event on Saturday against New Zealand, who have won gold at the Games on every occasion since the sport's introduction in 1998.

Despite heading to Ibrox on the back of a 25-game unbeaten streak, Hastings believes that the All Blacks can expect "serious challenges" to their dominance.

"I'm very much looking forward to the sevens competition at Ibrox stadium over the weekend," he told reporters.

"I do know there are a number of serious challenges going to be coming New Zealand's way and I do think the rugby sevens will prove to be one of the great spectacles of the Commonwealth Games.

"I, for one, am very much looking forward to it."

Forty-four subsequent matches will then take place on Saturday between 16 teams before the winners contest the finals on Sunday.
