New Sale director of rugby Steve Diamond is pleased with his side's first league win of the season as they overcome London Irish.

New Sale Sharks director of rugby Steve Diamond was pleased that his side's hard work paid off as they recorded their first Aviva Premiership win of the season against London Irish on Friday night.

The 21-9 victory capped a week of transition at the Salford City Stadium as Diamond replaced Bryan Redpath, who is now head coach, as director.

"The week's been different, but the coaching team behind the scenes know what they're doing, the lads paid attention to what we've done in the week and we managed to get a hard-fought win tonight.

"We stuck to the gameplan and we played well in the first half. We had a shaky start at the start of the second half where we gave the ball away six or seven times through handling errors."

The win has seen bottom-placed Sale move to within four points of Irish at the foot of the table.
