Campbell was considered to have a chance of a gold medal before the race, but New Zealand's Mahe Drysdale produced an excellent performance to seal gold ahead of the Czech Republic's Ondrej Synek.

With a quarter of the race gone, Drysdale and Synek opened up a considerable gap from Campbell and Sweden's Lassi Karonen to effectively set up two separate battles for the medals.

Drysdale was always a length ahead of Synek and in control of the gold medal, but the battle between Campbell and Karonen remained in the balance until around 200m when Campbell finally edged ahead to earn the bronze medal.
