Tom Daley: 'Sport would be tough for trans athletes'

Olympic diver Tom Daley admits that he has "never heard" of there being transgender athletes, but thinks that they would face a "difficult" challenge.

Olympic diver Tom Daley has admitted that he has "never heard" of a transgender person competing in a sport.

The 21-year-old came out in a YouTube video in December 2013 and is currently in a relationship with Oscar-winning director Dustin Lance Black.

During an interview with Pink News, Daley was asked about role models in sport for the trans community, but the diver believes that athletes would face many difficulties.

"The difficult thing with the trans community in sport - I think with the way it works, if you're a male transitioning into a female, you still sometimes have to compete in the male category? I think that's a little bit tough," said Daley.

"With diving I feel [trans people] would be completely accepted, but I don't know how it would work. I've never heard of it in sport, actually."

Daley won Olympic bronze at London 2012.
