Barcelona seal new £120m-a-season shirt sponsorship deal

Barcelona usurp rivals Real Madrid in the shirt sponsorship stakes after agreeing a deal with Nike worth around £120m a season.

Barcelona have agreed a long-term contract extension with sportswear giants Nike that will see them overtake Spanish rivals Real Madrid with the most lucrative shirt sponsorship deal ever.

The Catalan club have yet to officially reveal just how much the kit sponsorship is worth, but it is expected to earn the club around £120m a season.

That surpasses the previous high set by Madrid for such a deal, which was worth in the region of £106m a season over 10 years.

A club statement read: "FC Barcelona and Nike, Inc have extended their current sponsorship deal, which was due to end on 30 June, 2018. The long-term agreement is a landmark in global football and builds upon a highly successful partnership."

Barca president Josep Maria Bartomeu added: "We are excited by this new agreement and are confident we will be able to celebrate continued sporting successes together."

Barcelona are due to begin a £325m revamp of their Camp Nou home in 2018, while the additional funds could also help tie down star players for the long term.
