Dietmar Hamann insists that he has cleared the air with Joey Barton but says that things can "get out of hand" with the midfielder.

Former Liverpool and Manchester City midfielder Dietmar Hamann hopes that Joey Barton can put controversial incidents behind him.

The Queens Park Rangers player, who is currently on a season-long loan at Marseille, got involved in a heated Twitter spat with the ex-Germany international but has since apologised for his part in the argument.

Hamann, who has claimed that the pair have cleared the air, has decided against unfollowing the former Newcastle United midfielder on the social network site.

"I still follow him," Hamann told BBC Sport. "Joey is a very bright boy and sometimes things get a little out of hand with him. He got himself in a few scraps over the years. Hopefully at some stage he puts that all behind him because he is a very talented footballer."

The pair played together at Man City.
