Boston Red Sox manager John Farrell has revealed that he has been diagnosed with stage-one lymphoma.
The 53-year-old will miss the rest of the season to undergo treatment for the illness, leaving the team in the charge of assistant coach Torey Lovullo.
Farrell, who guided the club to a World Series triumph in 2013, has admitted that he is confident he will be cured and return to the team.
"I can honestly tell you that I'm extremely fortunate that it was found," Farrell told reporters. "It's localised. It's highly curable."
"Our thoughts and prayers are with John and his family at this time," the Red Sox said in a statement. "We are heartened by the news that this form of cancer is highly treatable and by the knowledge that the quality of care he will be receiving is second to none.
"We also know that John and his family are comforted by the outpouring of love and support coming from the entire Red Sox community."
The Red Sox currently hold a 51-64 record in their MLB season.
