Race at Windsor named after Paul Gascoigne

Paul Gascoigne has a race named after him at Windsor as a gift for his 46th birthday.

England legend Paul Gascoigne was handed a birthday surprise at Windsor when a race was named after him.

The 46-year-old celebrated his birthday with his ex-wife Sheryl, stepdaughter Bianca and son Regan months after returning from a stint in a US rehab clinic for alcohol addiction.

As a gift, the Happy Birthday Paul Maiden Auction Stakes was put on the racecard, but Gascoigne initially thought that it was a coincidence.

"It's only the second time I've been the races," the Daily Mail quotes Gascoigne as saying. "I got here and saw the second race was called the Happy Birthday Paul stakes and thought that it was a coincidence. It's great to be here with all the family. I won on the first race but didn't do so well on that second."

England stars Steven Gerrard and Wayne Rooney were among a number of players who helped fund Gascoigne's treatment.
