Newcastle United cancel Eric Bristow appearance after social media comments

Newcastle United announce that they have cancelled a scheduled appearance by Eric Bristow in light of comments made regarding football abuse victims.

Newcastle United have announced that they will no longer work with Eric Bristow after comments made by the former darts world champion on social media.

On Monday night, Bristow posted several tweets in relation to the footballers who were abused by convicted paedophile Barry Bennell, questioning why victims did not "sort out" their abusers, as well as describing darts players as "proper men" and calling footballers "wimps".

Bristow has since deleted many of the offending tweets but it has been reported that he will no longer be used by Sky Sports as a pundit.

The 59-year-old had been scheduled to make an appearance at St James' Park as part of a darts legends event, but Newcastle have said that will no longer be the case.

A club statement read: "In light of tweets made by the darts player Eric Bristow, Newcastle United has taken the decision today to withdraw him immediately from a scheduled appearance at an event taking place at St James' Park on December 6.

"The club will not work with Eric Bristow in the future. For those who have already bought tickets for the event, current player Kevin Painter has this morning confirmed he will take part."

Bristow won five world titles between 1980 and 1986 but his career at the top level was brought to an end due to dartitis.
