Gareth Bale 'honoured' to be on shortlist for Sports Personality of the Year

Real Madrid star Gareth Bale says that it is an "honour" to be named in the shortlist for BBC's Sports Personality of the Year.

Real Madrid star Gareth Bale has claimed that he is 'honoured' to be among the list of nominees for this year's BBC Sports Personality of the Year.

The Wales international, who moved to the Bernabeu for £85m from Tottenham Hotspur last summer, had a successful start to his Madrid career by winning the Copa del Rey and the Champions League final in Lisbon.

Earlier this week, Bale was named as one of the 10 nominees for the award, whose winner will be announced on December 14.

Bale wrote on Twitter: "Such an honour to be on the shortlist for #SPOTY2014 along with several other great athletes. Good luck to all the other nominees."

Golfer Rory McIlroy, who won two Major titles this season, and Formula 1 driver Lewis Hamilton, who won the championship with Mercedes, are favourites for the accolade.
