Manchester United midfielder Ander Herrera is said to be "mortified" at suggestions that he deliberately spat on a Manchester City crest during Saturday's clash.
Footage circulated on social media after the Red Devils' dramatic 3-2 win at the Etihad Stadium of the Spaniard seemingly taking aim at the pitchside badge when making his way down the tunnel for half time.
Herrera has yet to comment on the video firsthand, but a United spokesman has told The Telegraph that there was zero intent in the 28-year-old's actions.
"Ander has seen the footage of the incident and is mortified at any suggestion that his actions were deliberate," the spokesman is quoted as saying. "It was entirely accidental and there was no intent whatsoever."
