Radamel Falcao was the most popular footballer on Twitter during yesterday's transfer deadline day following his surprise move to Manchester United.

The Red Devils signed the Colombian striker on a season-long loan from Monaco.

Twitter has now revealed that Falcao was the most tweeted-about player during the close of the transfer window, with more than 1.5 million messages posted about the 28-year-old forward, according to the Daily Star.

Danny Welbeck's move from United to Arsenal was also a major talking point on the social networking website.

Javier Hernandez, Daley Blind and Tom Cleverley were also among the top five mentioned players on Twitter as the transfer clock ticked down.

Overall, 4.2 million deadline-day related tweets were sent throughout the day on Monday.
