Police chief David Crompton suspended over Hillsborough response

David Crompton, the chief constable of South Yorkshire Police, is suspended in the wake of the Hillsborough inquest findings.

South Yorkshire Police chief constable David Crompton has been suspended over his response to Hillsborough.

Yesterday, a jury found that 96 Liverpool fans who died in Sheffield at a 1989 football match were unlawfully killed and that there were police failings.

Crompton responded by admitting that his force got the policing of the match "catastrophically wrong" and "unequivocally" accepted the inquest jury's conclusions.

South Yorkshire's police and crime commissioner Dr Alan Billings confirmed Crompton's suspension and said that he had no choice but to act "based on the erosion of public trust and confidence".

Shadow Home Secretary Andy Burnham said in parliament today that there had been a "27-year cover up" and "those responsible must be held to account".
