Las Palmas back Sergio Araujo over drink-driving charge

Las Palmas president Miguel Angel Ramirez says that his club will stand by Argentine forward Sergio Araujo, even if the striker is found guilty of drink-driving.

Las Palmas president Miguel Angel Ramirez has insisted that his club will stand by Sergio Araujo, even if the striker is found guilty of drink-driving.

Araujo, who scored Las Palmas's equaliser in last weekend's 2-2 draw with Real Madrid, was reportedly stopped by police in the early hours of Monday morning and refused to take a breathalyser test.

It is understood that the 24-year-old will appear in court on Wednesday afternoon, but any charge will not impact Araujo's future with Las Palmas, Ramirez has confirmed.

"Sergio's issue is non-sporting related and it will be for the courts to determine if he has been negligent and the severity of the offences," Ramirez told Onda Cero.

"If Araujo is found to have been negligent, we will open internal disciplinary proceedings for that but we are not going to hang him in the town square. We are not going to end our contractual agreement with Sergio and we are not going to throw him out of the club."

Araujo joined Las Palmas from Boca Juniors in 2014, initially on loan, before making the move permanent in the summer of 2015.
