Las Palmas forward Sergio Araujo has been handed a nine-month prison sentence and banned from driving for two years following an incident towards the end of September.
The 24-year-old was stopped by police in the early hours of September 26 and it is understood that he refused to take a breathalyser test, which led to a drink-driving charge.
However, a court spokesman has revealed that Aruajo, who has no previous convictions, is "unlikely" to serve any time behind bars due to the fact that under Spanish law, any sentence that is non-violent and under two years does not necessarily require jail time.
"Considering it's a sentence of less than two years, it is unlikely the defendant will serve jail time," a court spokeswoman said in a statement following the charge.
There were inconsistencies in the statements from Araujo and the officers at the scene, with the Las Palmas forward claiming that he had been tricked by a civil guard into taking the test after moving from the passenger seat when the car was stopped.
