The BBC says that Monday's World Cup fixture between England and Tunisia attracted a peak television audience of 18.3m, making it the most-watched programme of 2018.

The BBC has revealed that Monday's World Cup fixture between England and Tunisia was the most-watched programme of 2018.

Gareth Southgate's team had to wait four days into the tournament before getting their campaign underway, but a late goal from Harry Kane earned the Three Lions a 2-1 victory in Volgograd.

The broadcaster has said that the contest attracted a peak audience of 18.3m, meaning that more people watched the game on BBC One than last month's Royal Wedding.

The BBC has also announced that it received over 3m requests to watch the encounter on the BBC iplayer and BBC Sport website, making it the highest-ever live audience for a BBC programme.

The same channel will show England's second Group G fixture against Panama on Sunday afternoon.
