NPCC describes violence as "short confrontation" between England fans, 70 locals

The National Police Chiefs' Council confirms that one England supporter was arrested following a "short confrontation" between fans and 70 local youths in Marseille.

The National Police Chiefs' Council has confirmed that one England supporter was arrested following a "short confrontation" between fans and 70 local youths in Marseille on Thursday night.

It was initially reported that two fans were arrested following a melee that was broken up by riot police using tear gas.

England fans have gathered in the city ahead of the Three Lions' opening Euro 2016 match against Russia on Saturday.

NPCC's lead for football policing, Assistant Chief Constable Mark Roberts has revealed that there had been no issues with England fans prior to the incident, but will issue banning orders to those who "misbehave".

A statement from Chief Constable Roberts read: "England supporters had been in Marseille yesterday without issue. At around midnight, there was a short confrontation where a group of approximately 70 local youths approached a pub where England fans had congregated.

"This was quickly dealt with by French police and one English supporter was arrested. We are aware of no further incidents overnight.

"English police officers continue to work closely with their French colleagues in Marseille and will identify supporters who misbehave with a view to seek banning orders on their return to the UK."

The tournament kicks off tonight when France take on Romania.
