Former England footballer Jimmy Greaves faces a "long, slow road to recovery" after suffering a severe stroke at the weekend.

The wife of former England footballer Jimmy Greaves has revealed that the 75-year-old faces a "long, slow road to recovery" after suffering a severe stroke.

The ex-Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham United striker was admitted to hospital on Sunday and remains in intensive care.

A statement from Greaves's wife Irene read: "Jimmy is having to do what he's told and understands the seriousness of what has happened to him. Its going to be a long, slow road to recovery and he is in the best possible hands.

"On behalf of Jimmy and our family, we would like to thank the many thousands of you who have voiced your support and concern. We would appreciate it if the media allowed us privacy for what is going to be a long period of rehabilitation."

Greaves, who scored 44 goals in 57 appearances for England, suffered a minor stroke in 2012, but made a full recovery.
