Spanish prosecutors are seeking a two-year jail term for Neymar and a hefty fine for his part in a controversial transfer from Santos to Barcelona in 2013.

Spanish prosecutors have recommended that Neymar be handed a two-year prison sentence for his part in a corruption case surrounding his move to Barcelona.

The Spanish High Court called on the 24-year-old to stand trial over his controversial switch from Santos to Camp Nou in 2013, as Brazilian investment group DIS argued that it did not receive the full amount owed from the high-profile transfer.

Barcelona announced earlier this month that they intended to appeal the decision, expressing their "surprise and total disagreement" with the development and judge Jose de la Mata's reasoning.

In the latest development in the ongoing saga, prosecutors are now seeking a jail term for Neymar as well as a fine of around £8.5m for his part in the corruption case.

Judge Jose Peals also called for former Barca president Sandro Rosell to be handed a five-year sentence, but reasoned that charges against current chief Josep Maria Bartomeu should be dropped.

The Catalan giants reached a deal with prosecutors during the summer to settle a separate case, paying a £4.7m fine in relation to tax evasion over the controversial transfer.
