Police make 28 arrests at Capital One Cup derby between Aston Villa, Birmingham

West Midlands Police confirm that 28 arrests were made at the Capital One Cup clash between Aston Villa and Birmingham City last night.

West Midlands Police have confirmed that 28 people were arrested at last night's Midlands derby between Aston Villa and Birmingham City in the Capital One Cup.

The arrests were in relation to violent disorder, breaching banning orders and invading the pitch during Villa's 1-0 victory in the third round of the competition.

Police have confirmed that 11 people were detained after one person suffered a minor head injury when windows were smashed at the Manor Tavern Pub in Portland.

"It is of course disappointing that any disorder broke out during the course of the evening and we reacted quickly to arrest several people in connection with the damage caused to the Manor Tavern Pub," ITV.com quotes chief superintendent Steve Graham as saying.

"However the aim of our operation was to engage with fans in the city centre and in the vicinity of the ground to ensure supporters were able to enjoy the evening in safety.

"We had put together a significant policing plan which was based on intelligence gathered before the game and I'm pleased that the vast majority of fans behaved well and contributed to an excellent atmosphere at the match."

Villa's victory was their third of the season.
