Geva Mentor: 'It's a promising start for Team England'

Geva Mentor admits that she felt nerves ahead of Team England's meeting with Wales, but she put them behind her to help secure a comfortable victory.

Team England's Geva Mentor has admitted that she felt nervous ahead of her side's opening Commonwealth Games contest.

The goalkeeper played her part as England got off to a winning start in Glasgow with a comfortable 62-25 victory against Wales in Pool B.

Anna Mayes's ladies' team were 29-10 ahead at the interval, before further extending their lead in the third quarter and going to to win the game with ease.

"It was a promising start for us, there are always nerves around the first game so the fact we were able to leave them in the changing room and have a strong start on court put us in good stead," Mentor told reporters. "There was a patch in the second and the third quarter where we slowed off, but it is about consistency for us.

"We're always working for that perfect game as a team and as individuals, but when you combine everything that will click."

Of her side's next match, against Australia tomorrow, the 29-year-old added: "We have a tough game against Australia tomorrow and we will build for that, and it's about putting ourselves in the best possible position."

England won bronze in the event four years ago in Delhi.
