Natalie Powell progresses into quarter-finals to keep British judo hopes alive

Natalie Powell beats Anastasiya Dmitrieva with a waza-ari to ensure that Team GB have a representative in the latter stages of the judo event in Baku.

Natalie Powell has been left to fly the flag for Great Britain's judo hopefuls at the European Games, having booked her place in the women's -78kg quarter-finals.

The 24-year-old was able to overcome Russian Federation's Anastasiya Dmitrieva in her first-round bout at the Heydar Aliyev Arena.

Powell, a Commonwealth Games champion, secured the victory with a waza-ari to set up a meeting with Marhinde Verkerk at the quarter-final stage in Baku.

It is a welcome relief for Team GB, following the earlier exits of Gemma Gibbons, Ben Fletcher, Frazer Chamberlain and Sarah Adlington in quick succession.
