Owen Livesey: 'I deserved to claim Commonwealth gold'

Owen Livesey believes that a gold medal is what he deserves following the hard work he put in leading up the Commonwealth Games.

Owen Livesey has claimed that a gold medal at the Commonwealth Games is exactly what he deserves following a number of years of hard work.

The 23-year-old managed to overcome teammate Tom Reed in the final to win the -81kg category, and he admits that it was pleasing to beat a fellow Englishman to the title.

"It's good to beat someone from home. There's a bit of tension there because you know each other so well," Livesey said. "We both know each other inside out, so at the very end there wasn't much in it.

"I had a year out when I was 18 and didn't really care about judo, but I came back, got my head in and got the result. You get out what you put in, and I got out exactly what I put in."

Livesey has won both the Commonwealth and British title this year.
