England women's hockey captain Kate Richardson-Walsh has spoken of her heartbreak and devastation at losing the Commonwealth Games final against Australia right at the death.
Lily Owsley put the home nation ahead with just 18 minutes to go, but their opponents equalised with just 11 seconds left on the clock, before winning 3-1 in the penalty shootout to secure the gold.
Richardson-Walsh told reporters: "It's so devastating to take it so close to the wire and then with 11 seconds to go that goal went in, it is just heartbreaking.
"We had stuck to our task for the whole game and just those tiny moments, it's just devastating.
"I'm so proud of the girls though after losing to [Australia] 3-0 in the group stage but when it is that close, you want to be on the winning team."
The Commonwealth Games women's hockey gold medal is Australia's third in a row.
