England's Becky Downie brushes off mistakes in Commonwealth Games beam final

England gymnast Becky Downie tells Sports Mole that her mistakes in the beam final at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games were "unlucky".

Team England gymnast Becky Downie has insisted that she will not be affected by her mistakes in this afternoon's beam final at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

The 22-year-old was given a score of 9.833 from the judges after she made three mistakes during her routine, leaving her in last place as Canada's Elisabeth Black scooped gold.

"I actually wasn't too nervous going into the beam," Downie told Sports Mole. "I felt happier going into beam today than I did for qualification. In qualification my feet were quite sore and I've had a couple of days off them and this morning has been really good, so I felt quite happy and I'm not really sure what happened to be honest!

"I think once I had the first mistake, I thought never mind, just try and make the rest the best that you can and the second mistake was a bit unexpected for me, and I was like, 'oh here we go!'. I just tried to keep the routine going and once I came off three times, I was just like, 'oh for god's sake!'. Sometimes that's just gymnastics - I haven't come off the beam the whole morning on any routines, and I've done three, four routines. That was just to me, unlucky.

"I haven't done as much training as I'd like this week because of my feet, and it shows gymnastics is all about consistency and if you can't put in the numbers, those are the kind of results that come out of it. I'm not too disappointed because I know that my training has been up and down for that event, but at the same time I'm looking forward to moving forward and seeing what's next."

Downie, who has won two gold medals this week in the team final and uneven bars final, also revealed to reporters that she is unlikely to feature in another Commonwealth Games.
