Europe retain Ryder Cup

Europe retain the Ryder Cup thanks to an amazing effort in the singles matches at Medinah Country Club in Chicago, Illinois.

Europe have staged a miraculous comeback to retain the Ryder Cup following an astonishing round of singles matches at Medinah Country Club.

Jose Maria Olazabal's men secured the eight points they needed to give them victory over the USA with a margin of 14 1/2 to 13 1/2.

It was Germany's Martin Kaymer who holed the vital putt in the penultimate match against Steve Stricker, writing one of the most famous chapters in golfing folklore.

Starting the day 6-10 down, Europe won the opening five singles matches thanks to triumphs for Luke Donald, Ian Poulter, Rory McIlroy, Justin Rose and Paul Lawrie.

Dustin Johnson and Zach Johnson restored parity for the Americans at 11-11 before Sergio Garcia edged out Jim Furyk to get Olazabal's team back in front.

The contest swung Europe's way again through Lee Westwood's victory over Matt Kuchar before Kaymer putted under intense pressure to deliver the trophy to his side.

Francesco Molinari and Tiger Woods halved the final hole but by then Europe's glory was sealed amid wild scenes.
